Songwriter Pam Barlow: "I started riding as a little bitty girl of five or so, and it’s a passion rivaled only by my love of music. For many years I was unable to ride until, as an attempt to cheer me up when my mom died, Bruce leased me a horse at the L.A. Equestrian Center. I couldn’t believe I’d survived without them for so long, and I was determined to somehow have horses in my life from then on. That’s when I saw my first Peruvian horse, and I became quite obsessed with them and set about learning everything about their history and bloodlines and gaits and temperament. All horses are amazing and these proud, hot-blooded creatures are especially so. When Bruce and I got into breeding them, we purchased young animals and hand raised them and did all their ground training ourselves. Then they had babies, and we had the joy of raising them too. It’s difficult to explain what the experience of relationship with these wise beings brings to your life, but it’s quite miraculous. They are healing entities, pure love; they can be like our children, but they also nurture us. And it seems like we women have an extrasensory connection with them too, that I remember being aware of even as a little girl, that continues to grow. This is what I was trying to express in “A Girl And Her Horse,” albeit in a more light-hearted, fun way. That the love of a good horse is really all a woman needs in her life to get her through."
